How to Create Email Forwarders in cPanel
An email forwarder allows you to automatically send a copy of any incoming email from one address to another. This is highly useful if you want emails sent to [email protected] to arrive directly in your personal Gmail inbox, or if you want multiple employees to receive emails sent to a generic info@ address.
Step 1: Open the Forwarders Tool
Log in to your cPanel dashboard. Scroll down to the Email section and click on Forwarders.
Step 2: Add a Forwarder
Click the blue Add Forwarder button under the Email Account Forwarders section.
Step 3: Configure the Forwarding Details
- Address to Forward: Enter the first part of the email address (the part before the @). For example, type
sales. - Domain: Select your domain from the dropdown list.
- Destination - Forward to Email Address: Select this option and enter the full destination email address (e.g.,
[email protected]).
Step 4: Save the Forwarder
Click the Add Forwarder button at the bottom. cPanel will immediately start forwarding new emails. Note: Forwarders only apply to emails received after the forwarder was created; they do not retroactively forward old emails.
Advanced Uses
Forwarding to Multiple People
If you want [email protected] to forward to three different employees, simply repeat the steps above three times. Create a forwarder from info to employee1@..., then create another forwarder from info to employee2@.... cPanel allows multiple forwarders on the same source address.
Do I need to create the Email Account first?
- Scenario A: If you only want to forward the email and do not want a copy saved on Hostinap's server (saving storage space), you do NOT need to create the email account in cPanel first. Just create the forwarder.
- Scenario B: If you want to keep a backup copy on the server and forward a copy to your Gmail, you must create the email account in cPanel first, and then create the forwarder.
Domain Forwarders (Catch-all)
On the main Forwarders page in cPanel, you can also click Add Domain Forwarder. This catches any email sent to a non-existent address at your domain (e.g. if someone typos [email protected]) and forwards it to another domain. Warning: We generally do not recommend catch-all forwarders as they often attract massive amounts of spam.
