What is DNS propagation?

When you update your domain's DNS records β€” for example, pointing your domain to a new hosting server β€” that change needs to travel across thousands of DNS servers around the world. This process is called DNS propagation. Until propagation is complete, different users in different locations may see different versions of your website. It typically takes between 15 minutes and 48 hours.

How do I check if DNS has propagated?

Why does my site load on mobile but not on my home computer?

Different devices use different DNS resolvers. Your mobile phone on 4G/5G often uses your carrier's DNS or Google DNS (8.8.8.8), while your home computer uses your router's default DNS (often your ISP's). If these two resolvers have cached different values, you will see different results β€” this is completely normal during DNS propagation.

How long does DNS propagation take?

Most DNS changes propagate within 1–4 hours for the majority of users. However, because DNS resolvers cache records for as long as the TTL (Time to Live) value instructs them to, it can take up to 48 hours in rare cases. Lowering your TTL value to 300 seconds (5 minutes) before making a DNS change can significantly speed up propagation.

What is a TTL in DNS?

TTL (Time to Live) is a value in your DNS records that tells resolvers how long to cache the record before requesting a fresh copy. A low TTL (e.g. 300 = 5 minutes) means changes propagate fast, but every request hits the authoritative server more often. A high TTL (e.g. 86400 = 24 hours) reduces server load but means changes take longer to be seen globally.

Use A record if you're checking if your website's IP address has updated. Use MX records to check email routing. Use NS records to verify your nameservers have switched. Use TXT records to check SPF, DKIM or Google Site Verification records. Use CNAME for aliases like www pointing to your root domain.
